Delegate & AAPI chair Harry Bhandari Celebrates AAPI Heritage Month and Recognizes Outstanding Community Members
Baltimore, MD – May 13, 2023 – May is AAPI Heritage Month, a time to celebrate the rich cultures and contributions of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders to our country. As we reflect on this month, let’s remember that access to quality healthcare is critical for everyone. Together, we must work to address health disparities and ensure that everyone has access to the care they need. Let’s continue to promote diversity, inclusivity, and equity in healthcare, education, and all aspects of our society.
At a town hall meeting held in Montgomery County, Senator Lamb, Delegate Karen Simpson, and many community leaders we have joined the event. In addition, the event featured a distinguished lineup of speakers and panelists, including Delegate Dr. Harry Bhandari and Senator Dr. Clarence Lam, who delivered keynote speeches and participated in panel discussions in two sessions, joined by Dr. Dawei Yang, Dr. Neil Roy, Dr. Suresh Gupta, Dr. Khim Maung, Asha Clark, Delegate Karen Simpson, Dr. Devlon Jackson, and Dr. Christine Handy. They discussed various topics related to increased patient health literacy, providing culturally competent care for diverse populations, improving access to healthcare information, and raising awareness about the disproportionate burden of premature death and illness among racial and ethnic minority groups. The Maryland Department of Health, Continuum Healthcare Network, and Asian American Center of Frederick supported the event.
The following inspiring individuals who have made significant contributions to their communities were recognized with the AAPI caucus citations:
- Mrs. Elizabeth Chung, for her dedication to addressing health disparities through cultural competency and language access by establishing Asian American Center of Frederick, which helps immigrants become independent and successful contributors to their communities.
- Rimple Gabri-PharmD, for her instrumental role in Giant Pharmacy’s vaccination and COVID-19 vaccination drive, serving thousands of seniors in Takoma Park and the Farsi Community in Silver Spring.
- Roxanne Yamashita, for her contributions to Small Things Matter’s food drives and COVID-19 vaccinations for the underserved population and seniors, partnered with Continuum Healthcare Network to host vaccination clinics for thousands of seniors.
- Jheni, for her advocacy for equal access to care and community awareness and engagement events, uses her experience in healthcare services and business management to develop exceptional business and account relationship management skills.
- Stephanie Yu, for her entrepreneurial activities, including founding ViiNet and Yuan Media, and Sunwater Institute’s foundation, provides scholarships, training, and mentorships to AAPI students.
AAPI Caucus was honored to recognize these outstanding individuals and their contributions to the AAPI community. Let us continue to celebrate the rich cultures and contributions of Asian Americans and Pacific Islanders and work towards a more equitable and inclusive society.
